We would like to thank all of our members and supporters who have helped establish the Gyuto Foundation and make it a viable center for the Dharma in the Bay Area. Without the support of major benefactors, we would not have been able to host His Holiness the Dalai Lama in San Francisco in 2007 and 2010 in San Jose.

Meyer Sound

Meyer Sound in Berkeley, California has been sponsoring the Gyuto Monks Choir since 1985. Whenever the Gyuto monks come to the United States for their tour, John and Helen Meyer from Meyer Sound provide all the necessary sound equipment, including a professional sound engineer, to help ensure the Gyuto Choir’s success. In 2005, over $40,000 worth of sound equipment was donated to the Gyuto Monastery in India by Meyer Sound. Along with the equipment, they also sent Berkeley sound engineers to set up the system for the monks. Soon, Meyer Sound will send additional donations to upgrade and improve the system.

In 2005 H.H. the Dalai Lama presided over the Grand Opening of the new Gyuto Monastery in Dharamsala. For the ceremony and the ensuing teachings more than 5,000 visitors came. Meyer Sound not only donated the complete sound system but also sponsored four gigantic TV plasma screens so that all visitors were able to follow the events and the teachings.

In 2007 and 2010 Meyer Sound sponsored the sound system for His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s teaching in San Francisco and in San Jose. The Gyuto monks have been very lucky to have such generous sponsors and we are very grateful to Mickey Hart (of the Grateful Dead) for making the connection with Meyer Sound. Because of their sound quality, the Gyuto monks choir has been very successful. Hollywood has even used Gyuto monks’ chanting for the sound track in feature films such as Kundun and Seven Years in Tibet.
