dividerSpecial Guru Puja for Lama Tsongkhapa Day
Tuesday, December 12th
7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

The Anniversary of Lama Je Tsong-khapa, 1357 - 1419 AD, is celebrated on the 25th day in the tenth lunar month of the Tibetan calendar. In remembrance of Lama Tsongkhapa, Venerable monks of Gyuto monastery will be performing the Guru puja (Tsog Offering).

Lama Tsong-khapa was one of the most famous and holy of the Tibetan masters who successfully integrated into his life his knowledge of the Buddha’s teachings, and his accomplishment of true spiritual insight or realization. As the founder of the Gelug-pa order of Tibetan Buddhism, Tsongkhapa’s presence was not only of great service in the preservation of the dharma, but also in thoroughly refining the teachings. To this day, his life and work profoundly inspire millions of people around the world. Je Tsongkhapa founded Ganden Monastery – one of the greatest monasteries in Tibet – and his popular Gelugpa tradition gave rise to many others following in this same order - such as is studied and practiced at Drepung, Sera, Gaden and Gyuto and Gyudme Tantric monasteries.

Lama Tsongkhapa, the founder of Geluk School of Tibetan Buddhism, -who was considered to be an emanation of Manjushri- passed away on the 25th day of Tenth Tibetan month in the year 1419. Jamchen Choeje Yeshi, one of the main disciples of Tsongkhapa, who founded Sera Monastery, passed away on the 24th day of the same month in the year 1443.

To practice purification, accumulation and making special aspirational prayers on these special occasions are said by the past masters to have stronger energy in purifying our bad karmas, reviving broken commitments and accumulating vast amount of merits.

Prayer Wheel Project

We have plans to install 365 Prayer Wheels that will surround the monastery and give eveyone an opportunity to circumambulate and turn the wheels. It is suggested that one recite the six syllable mantra - OM MANI PEDME HUNG - while turning the Prayer Wheels. When circumambulating, one can contemplate compassion and develop bodhicitta. Those who spin Prayer Wheels not only create benefit for themselves, but all sentient beings.
We have received donations from 160 sponsors for individual Prayer Wheels and were approved for a building permit for the first phase of the project. We have begun construction and we welcome donations for the Prayer Wheel project, in any amount, but currently we are not taking any more individual Prayer Wheel sponsors until further notice. The second phase of the project, which will include the remaining 205 wheels, will resume after the first phase is near completion.

We are also looking for donors to sponsor the printing of Compassion Buddha mantras - OM MANI PEDME HUNG - to enclose in the Prayer Wheels. We are looking for sponsors for printing mantras and we’ll need 100 or more boxes of Buddha of Compassion mantras, each box will cost $150.

Large Prayer Wheel Project has been completed!

Our large prayer wheel has been sponsored, completed, and consecrated. It contains 10 billion Buddha of Compassion mantras - OM MANI PEDME HUNG - as a dedication for the benefit of all sentient beings. We wholeheartedly thank our sponsors and volunteers who made this project happen.
